Servant

Week 2 Day 3

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” Philippians 2:7

The verse for today comes after the verses from the previous two days intentionally, as this verse is best explained by breaking down the characteristics of Christ that allowed Him to be a servant.

Reputation is of no consequence when you only desire to serve. Christ was not worried about leaving heaven to be a servant, for He knew that through being a servant, He could genuinely minister to us.

On the other hand, we often battle with the notion of what others think about us. Our position seems to be far greater than that of the service. The reputation of being great is that which we desire. Yet Christ revealed reputation is nothing and position is only something if it is the position of a servant. In the Old and New Testaments, servants play a vital role in revealing how we, as God’s children, are to live. The Apostle Paul declared himself to be a slave of Christ, and in being that slave, he was bound to the service of all. You should likewise declare yourself to be a servant.

Being a servant means that you will look to the needs of others and, within your abilities, meet those needs. Being a servant means taking the Spirit’s gifts to you and using them for the edification of others. Being a servant means that you, moment by moment, are willing to serve, no matter the task.

Ask yourself if others see you as a servant or simply wanting to be served. Through service, you reveal the greatness of God and the kind of person you indeed are. Becoming like Christ is you becoming a servant.

Prayer— Lord, I recognize that You took the form of a servant to meet my greatest need. Today, I ask You to make my heart and hands to serve You and others. Help me to realize that it is through being a servant of all that we become great in your eyes, in Jesus’ name, amen.
